The symbol for an led used in circuit diagrams is shown here.

Polarity of diode symbol. It has two electrodes called anode or plate and cathode it uses the rectifying properties of the union between type p and n materials of a semiconductor. A diode is a two terminal electronic component that conducts current primarily in one direction asymmetric conductance. For example many light emitting diodes have unusual polarity marks.

Usually the diode will have a line near the cathode pin which matches the vertical line in the diode circuit symbol. The diode is a semiconductor device that allows the current to flow in one direction only. In a perfectly ideal diode current flows in one direction only from the anode positive side to the cathode negative side which is marked with the stripe.

This symbols can be represented inside a circle. Diodes usually come in glass or plastic cylindrical packages marked with a stripe on one side to indicate polarity. The stripe on the glass or plastic diode package nicely corresponds to the cathode line on the diode symbol.

A diode vacuum tube or thermionic diode is a vacuum tube with two electrodes a heated cathode and a plate in which electrons can flow in only one direction from. The top diode a 1n4001 rectifier has a grey ring near the cathode. An arrow points at a vertical bar which has a line continuing out of it.

Even in automated assembly incorrect diode polarity is a common problem. It has low ideally zero resistance in one direction and high ideally infinite resistance in the other. A silkscreen arrow reduces the work and improves loading accuracy.

Diodes can have misleading markings. This stripe was also marked on the printed circuit board. The arrow indicates the positive side of the diode while the vertical bar indicates the negative side.

Diodes are indicated on schematics by a symbol that shows how the diode should be installed. When programming the pick and place machine figuring out the correct orientation requires some mental gymnastics. An led has a positive lead know as the anode and a negative lead known as the cathode.

This made it easy to see the correct orientation. An led must be connected in a circuit the right way around observe the polarity of the led.
